New Tips for Today

How do I get rid of carets from Outlook Express when I want to forward an email that is loaded with them.
Here's how you do it. Open Notepad (Windows Key + R , type notepad.exe and press Enter). Copy the message with all the carets and then paste it in Notepad. Click on "Edit" (on the toolbar) and click "Replace". Next to "Find what" put a carat. Next to "Replace with" put nothing - leave it blank. Then click "Replace all" - all the carets are gone. Now highlight the entire old message with all the carets (in your email program) by pressing the CTRL A keys then, while the entire message is highlighted, right click on it and chose "Paste" (or press CTRL + V). Your message is now caret free

Remember, the best way to keep carets at bay is not to exacerbate the problem by adding carets to your own emails. Make sure you email program doesn't insert carets on reply. In Outlook Express and Windows Mail you can easily do this.
Click Tools/Options/Compose, then click the "Plain text settings" button and uncheck the box that says "Indent the original text with '>' on replying or forwarding.

Using Scan Disk to check your hard drives
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
Scan Disk is a handy tool included with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Window 7 that you can use to check your hard drives for errors -- and many times fix the errors it finds. You should run CHKDSK every month or so to ensure the integrity of your hard drive(s) and to fix any errors you may have.

But, there's more to running CHKDSK than just running it in the default mode. By using "switches" you can run CHKDSK like a pro, even if you're not. Amaze your friends with your knowledge! It's easy. We'll show you how to use Scan Disk and show you a few switches you can use when running CHKDSK (and a little explanation of what each switch does):
Let's Check Our Hard Drive(s):
Double click on My Computer
Right click on the drive you want to check
Select Properties
Click on the Tools tab
Click the "Check Now" button
Select "Automatically fix file system errors"
Note: this is the same as running CHKDSK /f.
Select (if desired) "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"
This is the same as using the switch CHKDSK /R. this scan takes a long time - so be prepared
Reboot if necessary
You can also run CHKDSK from the command line (Run) which will give you even more options. Click "Start" then "Run" then type CMD . When the DOS-like window appears, type in one of the following commands at the prompt (the flashing cursor). Be sure you leave a space after CHKDSK (before the slash) or it won't work.

Here are some of the "switches" available. If you're currently running Windows and you're attempting to run CHKDSK on the Windows drive you'll get a message that the volume (drive) is currently in use. You'll be asked if you want to run CHKDSK the next time you start Windows. If that's what you want to do (and it normally is, type "Y" without the quotes).
CHKDSK /F (Run CHKDSK and fix any errors)
CHKDSK /R (Run CHKDSK and identify bad sectors)
CHKDSK /V (Run CHKDSK on FAT32 drives and display a verbose (wordy) output
CHKDSK /I (Run CHKDSK on NTFS drives and display a verbose output)
CHKDSK /C (Run CHKDSK and skip the checking of cycles within folder structures)

Two Windows 7 Tips
Windows 7 all versions
Do the Windows Shuffle - If you’re running a number of files from the same program, such as multiple Microsoft Office documents, Windows 7 lets you to switch between these windows easily. All you have to do is hold down the Ctrl key while repeatedly clicking the program icon in the taskbar. Each click changes the window to the next in sequence, in the exact order that you opened them.
Shake it up baby now - Remember those things you used as a kid that you drew pictures on and then turned upside down to erase them? What were they called? Etch-a-Sketch? Something like that. Well anyway, Windows uses they same idea to help you control windows on your desktop. Windows 7 AeroShake lets you to clear the inactive windows from your desktop by “shaking” over the window with which you're working. Just hover your mouse over the title bar of your active window, left-click to grab the window and then shake it from side to side - and like magic all the inactive windows disappear from your desktop. When you want to bring them back again just repeat the process and shake all the inactive windows back to where they were.

Windows Taskbar Options

we have a few different tips that show you all the stuff you can do to your Windows Task Bar, but I wanted to get them all in one place for convenience.

So, right-click a blank area of your taksbar and select Properties. In the resulting window, make sure the “Taskbar” tab is selected.

Under Taskbar appearance you'll see:
Lock the taskbar – Obviously named. If this is selected, you cannot re-size or move your taskbar. This is perfect for folks who find their taskbar on top of their screen one day and can't remember why.

Auto-hide the taksbar – Great for the neat-freak who wants a perfectly blank desktop. Select Auto-hide and your taskbar with peek-a-boo when you mouse-over the bottom portion of the screen.

Use small icons – If you think the icons on your taskbar are too big, then select this option.

Depending on which version of Windows you have, there may also be an option to relocate your taskbar on the screen (you can also click, hold and drag your taskbar to a different place, too!) as well as a drop-down box to set whether or not open taskbar buttons combine when more than one instance of the program is open.

Always Show Menus

A feature I miss in Windows 7 that was in previous versions was the menu with “File, Edit, View, etc.” menu that hung around up at the top of each explorer window. I guess Microsoft didn't want us to use it anymore.

Today we're bringin' it back!

Just click Start, and in the Search Box type “ Folder Options”. Make sure you're under the View tab, and under the Advanced Settings area, check “Always show Menus”. Click OK.
