Tips for today

Add A Shortcut to Add/Remove Programs To Your Desktop
Windows XP and Windows Vista here's a tip that will come in handy for almost everyone. We're going to show you how to create an nifty desktop shortcut that will launch "Add or Remove Programs" with just one click and it's very easy to do:

1. Right-click on your desktop
2. Choose "New" then choose "Shortcut"
3. In the command line that appears type (or paste) control.exe appwiz.cpl
4.Give it a name (whatever you like) - we called ours "Remove Programs"
5. Click "Finish" and you're done

Now you have a one-click way to access your Add/Remove Programs applet without doing all those clicks. It's easier on your wrist and faster too! If you hate junky desktops and don't want yet another shortcut icon on it, just drag the icon to your Quick Launch toolbar. In the Quick Launch Toolbar it will still be more handy than "Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs".

If you're ever working in Windows and suddenly everything freezes, don't panic. Don't hit the "Off" button. Don't take a chance on losing your work. Try this:

1. Press the "CTRL" "ALT" "DELETE" keys in sequence (in Vista it's shorter to right-click your taskbar and choose "Task Manager")
2. Task Manager Appears (Vista users will see "Open Task Manager" along with other menu options)
3. When Task Manger opens, click The "Processes" Tab
4. Find any and all instances of "Explorer.exe" and close them all by right-clicking and choosing "End Process"
5. If you've done this successfully your taskbar will disappear - don't worry - that's what you want.
6. Now, while you're still in Task Manager, click "File" "New task" and type in "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)
7. Your taskbar should now reappear and your computer that was frozen should now be ready to go

This trick will work most of the time - but not always. Sometimes you cannot even use your CTRL - ALT - DELETE keys. If this happens you'll just have to shut 'er down and restart. Don't worry too much, we've all had to do it sometime. Windows XP and Vista are much more forgiving than Windows 95, 98, and ME were, and that's a fact!

Title Bars - They're Not Just For Titles You Know!
Windows XP and Windows Vista

Sometimes those program window controls (at the top right of almost every window) - you know the minus sign, the rectangle(s) and the plus sign - can be difficult to work with.

Did you know that you don't need them anyway? Just double-click the title bar. (The title bar is the strip along the very top of the window which contains the program's name.) Double-clicking the title bar does the same thing as clicking the maximize button. To restore the Windows to its original size (if original size is not "maximum") just double-click the title bar again. If you want to see the window's context menu, right-click the title bar or hit the "Alt" key plus the spacebar key. You'll get choices to minimize, restore, or close the Window. And if the window has been maximized at some point in the current session, you'll see "maximize" there too.

And while we're in the maximizing mood, digiknow that if you want to minimize all windows at once (like when the boss walks in on you and you're goofing around) just press the Windows key plus the "M" key. When the boss leaves, just press the Windows key plus the M key again and all the windows are restored again. Amazing, what you can do, isn't it?

Keeping Your Drivers Up-to-date Improves Performance
Windows XP and Windows Vista

Installing the latest Drivers improves system performance and application compatibility. Updated drivers include numerous bug fixes as well as system optimizations. It is recommended for optimal system stability to only use official drivers and not beta or pre-release versions. Performance differences between driver versions including beta or prerelease drivers is negligible. The only time beta or prerelease drivers should be considered is when a serious application bug is fixed in the beta or prerelease version and the component manufacturer has not yet released the Official driver version that includes the bug fix.

Notes - Windows Update will install common driver updates, however these will not always be the latest versions and sometimes can even be an older version of one you have already updated, example: NVIDIA "Forceware" drivers. It is perfectly safe to install the Windows Driver Updates; but if you want the very best system performance you have to check for and install the latest drivers manually. If you are having trouble identifying your hardware use:

WinAudit - Download - Home Page (Freeware) A professional system information tool. Quickly identify components and software installed on your computer and whole lot more. Learn things about your system you never knew before. Also gives you the rundown on installed hardware and current drivers including the date which your drivers were last updated. They offer different versions, so be sure you download the right version for your operating system.

It was on November 19, 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln gave his now famous "Gettysburg Address" at the consecration of the Civil War cemetery there. Here on the Gettysburg Address Web site, you can explore the documents from that event.

All Your Faves

Here is a Web site called All My Faves and it features links to almost every Web site you could ever think of. When you first get to the site, you'll see a line of tabs that run across the top, as well as, different categories listed on the left hand side of the page. And no matter which one you click on, you'll see gobs of company logos that just fill up the entire page.

Picasa 3

Google announced the arrival of Picasa 3. The new version offers even more features than the previous one, so there's plenty of new stuff to try out. Or, if you've never used Picasa before, you surely don't want to miss out on the new version 3!

Here are some of the great things you can do with Picasa 3:

Retouch Images: In Picasa 3, you can fix little problems with your pictures using the Retouch tool. Simply click on the problem area and the program will handle it from there.

Share Images with Web Albums: Picasa 3 offers a new feature that allows you to automatically upload your images to the Web so that others can see them. You can even choose the option of Sync Pictures so that any changes made on the album will automatically update to the Web.

Make Movies: With Picasa 3, you can take your pictures and turn them into movies. It's a great feature and it's one I use with my own photos all the time.

Watermarks: You can add a custom watermark to your pictures to mark them as your own. If you have images that are unique, that's a great feature for you.

The above list is short in comparison to the full list of capabilities Picasa 3 has. So, if you want to learn more about Picasa 3 and get it for yourself, you can download it right here.
