spell-checking in Windows Mail

In order to use the default Spell Checker in Outlook Express or Windows Mail. you need to have at least one MS Office program installed (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) if you don't you cannot use the built-in spell checker. This leads us to believe that you had one MS Office program installed on Windows XP. In the past most new computers came with at least MS Works installed. MS Works included MS Word which satisfied the requirements for having at least one MS Office program installed. If you had MS Works or Office installed on Windows on your XP computer your spell-checking option was available in Outlook Express.

It looks like your Windows Vista computer didn't come with at least one MS Office application installed - therefore you have no spell checking in Windows Mail. We've just discovered a free spell checker that will check spelling in Windows Mail (and any other Windows application). We've only tested it briefly but it seems to work very well on Windows Vista. You can learn more about tinySpell (free version) by visiting this page.

How to set up Gmail to work in your email program - the right way!

Here's how to setup Gmail so you don't download all those old emails - and only download emails received from the time you setup your Gmail account in your email program.

1. Login to your Gmail account on the Web ( www.gmail.com )
2. At the top right of the page you'll see a link called "Settings" (click it)
3. You'll the following Settings Toolbar appear on the Web page:

4. Click "Forwarding and POP"
a.) Make sure you have "Disable Forwarding" selected
b.) Select "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on"
c.) Make sure you click "Save changes" when you're done.

If you don't configure Gmail exactly the way we showed you, you will be downloading EVERY email you've ever received in your Gmail account since the first day you set it up. If you've had your Gmail account for a couple of years, that could be a lot of email. You must set it up to receive ONLY to receive emails that arrive from now on. And, don't forget to click "Save Changes" when you're done - or guess what? You'll be downloading all 15,000 emails you've received since 2005.

For those of you with Gmail accounts and you want to know more about setting up Gmail in your Outlook Express or Windows Mail program, complete instructions are available from this page. Instructions for other email programs are available from your Gmail account under "Settings".

Windows Mail users: Use the same instructions as Outlook Express. Even the auto-configuration tool for Outlook Express works in Windows Mail. Just because you don't see Windows Mail listed, doesn't mean you can't use Gmail in your Windows Mail program.

Windows Vista Tips & Tricks
These tips/tricks work in all versions of Windows Vista unless otherwise noted.

Windows Vista's Hibernate Feature

Windows Vista's Hibernate feature isn't the same as Windows XP's. Windows XP's Hibernate allowed applications running in the background to wake-up the computer - thereby rendering Hibernate useless. It was more like a power-nap than a hibernation. While we all need power-naps, your computer doesn't. 'Nuff said.

Windows Vista's Hibernate feature is far better and more reliable than Windows XP because it will not allow applications and hardware to override your computer's hibernating state. When entering "Hibernation" any running applications will be warned when the computer is about to enter hibernation and they will have a second or two save their progress and settings before Windows enters the hibernate state. So, when you tell your Vista PC to go to sleep, it really does.

Hibernation can be a useful alternative to shutting your PC down every night because Windows Vista is notoriously slow to shut down and boot up. Hibernation allows you to get up in the morning, wake up your computer and resume working instantly rather than waiting for the long Windows Vista boot process to complete. So consider using Vista's Hibernate instead of shutting down. It can save energy and your time

Add tags to pictures using Windows Photo Gallery

You can use Windows Photo Gallery to add tags to your pictures. Tags are meaningful words or phrases that describe who or what is in the picture, where the picture was taken, or whatever other information you describe the picture.

Tagging your pictures makes them much easier to find in the future, because you can easily display all pictures that have a particular tag.

You can add tags to an entire batch of pictures at once. For example, you could add a "Christmas 2007" tag to 30 or 40 pictures of a family Christmas gathering.

Here's how to add tags to pictures using Windows Photo Gallery:

In Photo Gallery, select the pictures that you want to tag. (To select more than one picture, hold down the CTRL key while you click the pictures.)

Click the Info button and the Info pane will open. In the Info pane, click "Add Tags", type the name of the tag in the box, and then press ENTER. The tag is added to all of the selected pictures. You can add as many tags as you want.
