Stop Outlook Express "Compact Files and Folders to save space" dialog

Every time I sign out of Outlook Express, a window pops up asking if I want to compress my files to save space. How do I stop this box from coming up? And, if I DO click ok and have that done, will it change photos from jpeg to bitmap or change photos in any way? Your help, as always, will be so appreciated. I tried for HOURS to figure out how to disable that box popup, but can't find out how.

The only way to stop that dialog is to allow it to compact your folders. This dialog will reappear after you've open Outlook Express 100 times (normally!).

Compacting folders does not alter the image format of any saved emails. Outlook Express compacts folders to remove all the items in your Deleted Items folder that you thought were already deleted anyway.

Like most database programs, Outlook Express does not actually remove an item from the Deleted Items folder when you delete a message. Instead, it "tags" the messages for removal at a later time. This "later time" comes when you compact your folders. Until then, the deleted message is still occupying disk space. This can, if left unmanaged, result in Outlook Express performing slowly and taking more time to access messages and folders (*DBX files).

To recover disk space, keep your files as small as possible, and to keep Outlook Express from performing poorly - you need to compact your folders regularly.

WARNING: When you're compacting folders do not shut down your computer before compacting has completed! And, remember that any interruption during the compacting process could cause a loss of Outlook Express data. So be sure you don't compact folders during a thunderstorm, blizzard, or anytime when you are susceptible to a power outage. Also, don't open programs or do multi-tasking while compacting is in process. Just let Outlook Express do its job and then you can go back to work on your computer. If you don't have time to compact at the time the prompt appears - click Cancel. The next time you close Outlook Express you'll have an opportunity to compact folders again

This new tool is a freeware program called Magic Mail Monitor 3. Think of it as pre-email program that allows you to view, read, delete and even reply to emails before you even open your email program. Once you've deleted all the sp*am and unwanted messages (including those with virus-infected attachments) - you simply open your email program and download only the pristine email you want.

Controlling sp*am that you receive is your responsibility - and no one else's. Take control, tell your ISP to do what an ISP should do and just handle your connection to the Internet and stay out of your personal email. Learn more about Magic Mail Monitor 3. It handles multiple email accounts, imports your accounts directly from Outlook Express, and allows you to see what's on your account on your ISP's mail-server before you download it using your email program. It does even more too - but you'll have to read more about that by visiting the Magic Mail Monitor 3 homepage

PLAY AND LEARN!

Ever notice the tiny little icon in the far left hand corner of many of your Windows programs' title bars? It's there for more than just appearance. Left-click on the icon to access commands that resize the application's window. Right-click on it to reveal a number of other settings unique to that particular program. For example, right-clicking on the My Computer title bar icon gives you several options. Experiment with your favorite applications to reveal what secrets that little icon has in store for you.

DID YOU THINK THE NUMLOCK KEY WAS USELESS?

When ToggleKeys is turned on, your computer will make a high or low tone beep when you press any of the NumLock, CapsLock, or ScrollLock keys. Instead of turning this feature on in the Accessibility Options, you can simply hold down the NumLock button for five seconds. See? It's much quicker than groveling around in Accessibility options, isn't it? You will hear a beep to let you know it's on and you will see a dialog window appear as well. To turn it off, just hold down the NumLock for five seconds again.

HELP IS JUST A CLICK AWAY

When you find a section of Windows Help that you may want to refer to again later, you can click "Add to Favorites" and you'll be able to return to it quickly in the future. The next time you need to refer to it, just open Windows Help again, and click the Favorites icon at the top of the window.

Will It Fit? Finding combined size of multiple files

Windows (all versions)

If you are copying files to a CD, USB Flash (key) Drive or a floppy and are not sure if they will all fit, you can highlight all the files you want to copy, right click and choose Properties, then you can see the total file size of the group. This is especially useful when transferring photos to a disk!

FYI - Floppies hold 1024 kb (about 1.4 MB), USB Flash Drives can hold anywhere from 128MB to 4 GB -or more, depending on the size you purchased, and CDs vary, so refer to the information that came with your CD-RW blank disks.
